Science,Religion and Reality

July 27, 2011 12 comments

Yeah that’s kinda true.I miss my old self,I want to re-experience that happy, optimistic kid with 0 knowledge believing that everything is perfect.Yeap that was me,until I woke up from my sleep of ignorance…

Okay,here’s my story

I used to be a believer, not only in God but in pretty much everything,UFOs,ghosts, myths, legends, magic etc…I didn’t need evidence,I believed in these things just because I liked them.About my belief in God..I was praying for others, sometimes for myself, just like the people today.I was going to church on Saturday,I even helped the priest in Divine Liturgy. But I was interested in science too. When I compared science and religion I saw that they were contradicting each other. They both make claims about the nature of reality. The difference is that religion makes unsupported claims while science needs evidence to support something,it doesn’t make claims out of the air, also science is open-minded,open for new ideas, conversely religion is stuck on philosophy and ideas written 2 thousand years ago.

At that point of my life I started reading about other religions, what I realized is that they all have some good and bad parts. All religions shape people’s perspective of the world, which means they control the thoughts and the way of living of whole societies. One common thing is that they all use something like the concept of “Hell”.Why?Because what’s the point of having rules if there’s no consequence to breaking them? This is a scare tactic to get people to believe through fear what they can’t believe through reason and evidence.

After getting deeper and deeper in many religions I understood that people don’t need religion in their lives.Whoever says that life without a belief in God is meaningless and we would kill each other,is just ignorant.Even if this were true, it would only prove that the belief in the existence of a God is what gives meaning to our lives, not that a god actually does exist. Also it’s like you’re telling me that the only reason I don’t kill someone is because of the God,which is stupid.Do cats kill cats?Do dogs kill dogs?Do lions kill lions? No.Do they believe in God?NO!Morality is older than any religion. Is it more moral to do something because you think you’ll get rewarded, because you think you’ll get punished if you don’t do it, or because you just think it’s the right thing to do?think about it.I don’t need to believe in God to know that stealing, murdering etc. is bad.

Then, after all that knowledge I decided that I don’t need religion,I don’t need to lie to myself pretending to know things that I don’t know. This is just illogical.Even though my life would be happier if I believed in God.Who doesn’t want an afterlife?Who doesn’t want to believe that everything happens for a reason? That there’s a Great Plan for him?BUT

Religion makes people who don’t have all the answers to think that they do.Positing a God to SUPPOSEDLY answer a question solves nothing.

“Hey what was that?”

“I don’t know”

“Then God did it!”

So if you don’t understand something, just call it a miracle and stare in wonder? Glad the people who are working on medicinal research don’t feel that way.

……………………..

“He died”

“Millions of Children suffer everyday”

“Don’t worry,it’s God’s will”

To explain it,you have to come up with some sort of very strange excuse for God.

Something like”God wants these children to suffer and die for some divine, mysterious reason”
Then you just push it out of your mind because it absolutely doesn’t fit with your view of a loving and caring God.

As I said before glad the people who are working on medicinal research don’t feel that way.

Imagine:

“Man, cancer kills a lot of people”

“Well, it must be the will of god, no need to try to fix it”

THIS IS IGNORANCE! WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!

Watch these 2 videos,I could publish more but it’s up to you now.

“The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance” Socrates

However people of faith need to have so much courage to talk about this. The fear of losing their faith, their afterlife, their social circle is to scary for the vast majority that every time someone educated try to explain them some things they block their ears as they think “the devil” is challenging their faith.

If they just understood why they dismiss all the other possible Gods, they would understand why I dismiss theirs.

The question is,If you want to make this world a better place, will you try to place a conversation about the nature of the universe in the 21st century where we have all that knowledge available to us OR you want to place it in 1st century where people based on they knowledge and culture tried to explain the world(just like ancient Greeks,Egyptians etc did with their religions)

John Lennon’s song “Imagine” is just awesome.Listen carefully to the lyrics and you will understand.

 Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
